ESCOGE AMAR

CHOOSE TO LOVE

Now I introduce and commend to you our sister Phoebe… that you may receive her in the Lord [with love and hospitality], as God’s people ought to receive one another. And that you may help her in whatever matter she may require assistance from you. —ROMANS 16:1–2 AMP

The amplification of Romans 16:2 indicates that to receive someone “in the Lord” is to extend “love and hospitality” to that person. This is the way Paul asked the believers in Rome to receive Phoebe. At the end of Romans 16:2, he also told them to help her however she needed help.

Love is not something that automatically happens because we are Christians. We must purposefully choose to love others.

Love is not simply a warm feeling toward someone. It goes beyond feelings, and we demonstrate it through the way we treat people. Love is also a decision. Colossians 3:14 tells us to “put on love,” which means that loving people is a choice we make. We do it intentionally, whether we feel like it or not.

One way Paul wanted the Roman believers to express love to Phoebe was to help her, but helping people is only one way to show people we love them. Other ways include forgiving them when they hurt us and sincerely wanting the very best for them and praying for them to have it. We can also show love by respecting people, protecting them, and standing up for them if others speak negatively about them.

I hope that today you will choose to love people and express your love in practical ways.

Prayer:
“Father, help me choose to love—intentionally—everyone who comes across my path. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
