Pero ustedes miren por ustedes mismos. Porque los entregarán en los concilios, y serán azotados en las sinagogas. Por mi causa serán llevados delante de gobernadores y de reyes, para testimonio a ellos.

Sopesa las consecuencias: quédate hasta bien tarde por la noche para ver la película que has estado esperando, pero piérdete asistir a la fiesta de pijamas en casa de tu mejor amigo, este fin de semana. Tómate una galleta de chocolate caliente antes de cenar, pero piérdete la tarta helada de postre. Únete al coro del grupo de jóvenes en lugar de cantar en la iglesia de niños, pero no serás solista. Tal vez estas decisiones no te resultarían muy difíciles de tomar. Pon el listón más alto y tendrás que reflexionar más.
Los discípulos tenían que sopesar todas las probabilidades. Y estas eran altas: seguir a Jesús y arriesgarse a ser azotado y atacado, o hablar delante de los líderes políticos en representación de Jesús. Es más difícil aceptar ser azotado que esperar en el banco que llegue tu turno de cantar en el coro o renunciar a un postre por otro.
Jesús no quería que los discípulos se sorprendieran por los riesgos de seguirle. Fue directo con sus seguidores: esto resultará difícil. Las recompensas serán milagrosas, pero os pueden costar caras. Si te enfrentaras hoy a esos riesgos por seguir a Jesús, ¿todavía lo elegirías? Es una pregunta difícil. Solo quienes tengan la fe más fuerte asumirán el riesgo.
Oración
Señor, desconozco si mi fe es lo suficientemente fuerte como para asumir riesgos por ti. Te ruego que edifiques mi fe y que me muestres tu asombroso poder, para que no me piense dos veces seguirte cuando me enfrente a los riesgos mayores.
Day 311 – Worth It?
You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

Weigh the consequences: stay up late tonight to watch the movie you’ve been waiting for but lose out on going to your best friend’s sleepover this weekend. Eat a warm chocolate chip cookie before dinner but lose out on ice cream cake after dinner. Join the youth group choir instead of singing in children’s church but you’ll only be a backup singer. These decisions might not be too hard for you. Raise the stakes, and you’d have to think harder.
The disciples had to weigh the odds. And the odds were high: follow Jesus and risk being beaten and attacked but get to speak in front of the political leaders on Jesus’ behalf. A beating is much harder to accept than waiting in the pews for your turn to sing in the choir or giving up one dessert for another.
Jesus didn’t want the disciples to be surprised by the risks of following him. He was straight with his followers: this will be hard. The rewards will be miraculous, but it may cost you a lot. If you faced those risks today for following Jesus, would you still choose him? That’s a tough question. Only the strongest faith will take the risk.
Prayer
Lord, I don’t know if my faith is strong enough to take risks for you. Please build my faith and show me your awesome power, so I won’t think twice about serving you in the face of major risks.
