Jacobo y Juan, los hijos de Zebedeo, se acercaron a él y le dijeron: «Maestro, queremos que nos concedas lo que vamos a pedirte». Jesús les preguntó: «¿Qué quieren que haga por ustedes?». Ellos le respondieron: «Concédenos que, en tu gloria, uno de nosotros se siente a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda».

¡Hablando de ser osados! Es exactamente lo que fueron estos dos hijos de Zebedeo. ¡Fueron odiosos! Lo que en realidad le preguntaron a Jesús fue que si podían tener privilegios especiales cuando fueran al cielo. Santiago y Juan tenían una meta egoísta: querían ser grandes.
¿Te imaginas pidiéndole eso a Jesús? Cuando los demás discípulos descubrieron lo que los dos hermanos le habían solicitado, se quedaron perplejos. Estaban enojados. Jesús tampoco estaba demasiado contento. Sin embargo, en lugar de enfurecerse contra ellos, decidió explicar lo que significa la verdadera grandeza.
En lo que a Jesús concierne, ser asombroso no es algo que tenga que ver con pedir favores especiales. Escoge hacer lo que los demás rechazan. Ser grande a los ojos de Dios no tiene nada que ver con sentarse en tronos en palacios (o en el cielo), sino con preocuparse de otras personas.
¿Qué me dices de cuidar de tu hermano o hermana? ¿Y de tu madre y tu padre? ¿Qué puedes hacer para ayudarlos hoy?
Oración
Señor, por mucho que quiera ser importante, prefiero ser grande a tus ojos. Perdóname cuando intento agarrar lo mejor para mí.
Day 290 – Serve First
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
(MARK 10:35−37)
Talk about being bold. That’s exactly what these two sons of Zebedee were. They were obnoxious! They actually asked Jesus if they could have special privileges when they went to Heaven. James and John had one selfish goal: they wanted to be great.
Can you imagine saying that to Jesus? When the other disciples discovered what the brothers had asked Jesus, they came unglued. They were angry. And Jesus wasn’t too happy either. But rather than get mad at them, Jesus decided to explain what real greatness means.
As far as Jesus is concerned, being awesome is not about asking for special favors but asking for ways to serve. Look for ways to be helpful. Choose to do what nobody else wants to. Being great in God’s eyes isn’t about sitting on thrones in palaces (or in Heaven). It’s about caring for other people.
What about caring for your brother or your sister? What about your mom and dad? What can you do that would help them today?
Prayer
Lord, as much as I want to be important, I want to be great in your
eyes most of all. Forgive me when I try to grab the best for myself.
