Pero el Señor le dijo: «Ustedes los fariseos limpian por fuera el vaso y el plato, pero por dentro están llenos de robo y de maldad. ¡Necios! ¿Acaso el que hizo lo de afuera, no hizo también lo de adentro?».

Tu madre te manda a hacer la cama para que tu prima pueda dormir en ella cuando venga de visita. Corres a tu dormitorio y echas un hermoso edredón púrpura y bonitos cojines sobre la cama. A continuación te percatas de que todos tus calcetines sucios y tus zapatos están por el suelo. Los agarras rápidamente, los metes bajo el edredón, y vuelves a estirarlo.
¿Crees que tu madre lo va a aprobar? Probablemente no. Desde luego que tu prima no va a querer dormir sobre ropa sucia y zapatos malolientes.
Los fariseos, que eran líderes religiosos, estaban haciendo algo parecido. «Oye, nosotros vestimos la ropa adecuada para la iglesia. Memorizamos todas las Escrituras», decían. No obstante, a Jesús no podían engañarlo. Por fuera, parecían ser seguidores de Dios. Pero mirando en su interior, Jesús vio que sus corazones estaban llenos de ropa sucia. No amaban a Dios. Ciertamente no amaban a los demás. Y no estaban siguiendo los preceptos divinos de ser amables, humildes y agradecidos.
A Jesús le preocupa lo que hay dentro de ti, no tu aspecto exterior ni lo que finges ser ante los demás. Si hay que proceder a una limpieza interior, él quiere hacerlo. ¿Se lo permitirás?
Oración
Jesús, sé que hay pensamientos y sentimientos dentro de mí que no te he permitido limpiar. Aunque finja ser perfecto, sabes quién soy en realidad. Necesito que tú limpies la basura que hay en mi interior, para que otros vean tu obra.
Day 259 • Cleaning Up the Inside
Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
(LUKE 11:39−41)
Your mom tells you to go make your bed so your cousin can sleep there when she visits. You run to your room, throw a beautiful purple quilt and pretty pillows over the bed. Then you notice all your dirty socks and shoes on the floor. You grab them quickly, toss them under the quilt, and smooth the quilt back down.
Think your mom would buy it? Probably not. There’s no way your cousin wants to sleep on dirty laundry and smelly shoes.
The Pharisees, who were religious leaders, were doing the same kind of thing. “Hey, we wear the right church clothes. We memorized all the Scriptures,” they said. But Jesus wasn’t fooled. On the outside, the Pharisees looked like they were God followers. Looking on the inside, Jesus saw their hearts were full of dirty laundry. They didn’t love God. They certainly didn’t love others. And they weren’t following God’s ways of being kind, humble, and grateful.
Jesus cares about what’s inside you, not how you look on the outside or what you pretend to be to others. If there is cleaning to be done inside, he wants to do it. Will you let him?
Prayer
Jesus, I know there are thoughts and feelings inside me that I haven’t let you clean up. Even if I pretend to be perfect, you know who I really am. I need you to clean out the junk inside me, so that others will see your work.
