Tres veces me azotaron con varas. Una vez fui apedreado. Tres veces sufrí naufragios. Una vez pasé toda una noche y el día siguiente a la deriva en el mar. He estado en muchos viajes muy largos.

Las personas enferman. Mueren. Nacen con discapacidades o acaban atados a una silla de ruedas por culpa de un accidente. Algunos viven con el estómago hambriento. Otros viven con el corazón quebrantado y con familias rotas. El sufrimiento es la consecuencia del pecado en el mundo. Sin embargo Dios sigue estando con nosotros en el dolor y en la angustia.
El apóstol Pablo se enfrentó a muchísimo sufrimiento. Entre otras cosas, fue apedreado y lo dejaron por muerto. Tres veces sobrevivió a un naufragio. El pobre tipo no tuvo la seguridad de vivir en un único lugar. Siempre estaba de acá para allá, y con frecuencia tuvo que escapar por su vida. La detallada descripción que Pablo hace del sufrimiento en su vida es desgarradora. Sin embargo, su amor por su Señor no se enfrió. Su fe permaneció fuerte a pesar de ser extremadamente débil. ¿Tiene esto algún sentido?
Pablo entendió que seguir a Jesús es algo que va acompañado de paz y amor que hacen que este mundo pecaminoso sea soportable. Aunque tener a Jesús en tu vida no es una garantía contra la aflicción, él es la roca que te sostiene para que esa dificultad no te hunda. Permanece firme en él. Deja que él tome el dolor y el sufrimiento, y que te consuele. Sin él, estás completamente solo en un mundo duro y violento.
Oración
Señor, qué bueno saber que mis problemas no son una sorpresa para ti. Recuérdame que me apoye en ti para recibir fuerza cuando se crucen en mi camino cosas difíciles.
Day 234 • Peace in Tough Times
Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move.

People get sick. People die. People are born with handicaps or wind up wheelchair-bound after an accident. Some people live with hungry stomachs. Some live with broken hearts and broken families. Suffering is a consequence of the sin in the world. But God is still with us in pain and heartache.
The apostle Paul faced plenty of suffering. Among other things, he was stoned and left for dead. Three times he survived shipwrecks. The poor guy didn’t have the security of living in one place. He was always on the move and often running for his life. Paul’s detailed description of the suffering in his life is gut-wrenching. But Paul’s love for his Lord did not grow cold. His faith remained strong in spite of being extremely weak. How does that make sense?
Paul understood that following Jesus comes with peace and love that makes this sinful world bearable. While having Jesus in your life is not a guarantee against trouble, he is a rock to support you so that hardship will not wreck you. Stand firm on him. Let him take the pain and suffering and comfort you. Without him, you’re on your own in a tough, rough world.

Lord, it’s good to know that my problems aren’t a surprise to you. Remind me to lean on you for strength when tough stuff comes my way.
