No te harás imagen, ni semejanza alguna de lo que está arriba en el cielo, ni abajo en la tierra, ni en las aguas debajo de la tierra. No te inclinarás ante ellas, ni las honrarás. (ÉXODO 20.4–5A, RVC)
¿Sabías que los Diez Mandamientos son más que un puñado de normas? Todos ellos tratan de las buenas relaciones con Dios, los padres, los amigos y los enemigos. El segundo mandamiento no parece encajar demasiado en el tiempo actual: ¿hacerse ídolos? ¿Inclinarse ante estatuas? ¿Conoces a alguien que viaje por todas partes buscando estatuas para sentarse frente a ellas y cantarles? No obstante, el segundo mandamiento sigue siendo importante.
Tal vez no te des cuenta de que tienes ídolos en tu vida. Quizás tengas a cierto cantante, actor o atleta en muy alta estima. ¿Cuál es la forma infalible de saber si alguien o algo es un ídolo? Piensas en esa persona o cosa todo el tiempo. Incluso piensas que tu vida será mejor si lograr encontrarte con esa celebridad o siendo como él o ella. Dios sabe que hay cosas que te pueden distraer fácilmente. ¿Están tomando los ídolos el lugar de Dios en tu vida? Solo él merece toda tu atención y el cien por cien de tu admiración. Y es el único que puede cambiar tu vida.
Oración
Señor, ¡qué fácil resulta distraerse con celebridades y cosas terrenales! No quiero idolatrar a nadie ni a nada, sino a ti. Te ruego que me recuerdes de ponerte a ti primero en mi vida.
Day 217 • Who’s Your Idol?
You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.
(EXODUS 20:4–5A)
Did you know the Ten Commandments are more than a bunch of rules? They are all about good relationships with God, parents, friends—and enemies. The second commandment doesn’t quite seem to fit for today: building idols? Bowing down to statues? Do you know anyone who travels around looking for statues to sit down in front of and sing to? But the second commandment is still important.
You may not realize you have idols in your life. Maybe you think highly of a certain singer, actor, or athlete. The sure-fire way to know if someone or something is an idol? You think about that person or thing all the time. You may even think that your life will be better if you get to meet that celebrity or be like him or her. God knows there are things that can easily distract us. Are idols taking God’s place in your life? He is the only one who deserves your full attention and one hundred percent admiration. And he is the only one who can change your life.
Prayer
God, it’s easy to be distracted by celebrities and earthly things. I don’t want to idolize anyone or anything but you. Please remind me to put you first in my life.
