CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE
But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy.
—EZRA 3:12
The scene depicted in Ezra 3:10–12 clearly shows that people can experience the same thing yet respond to it totally differently, based on their attitude.
The rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem after it had been destroyed was very important to God and to His people. When the foundation of the temple was complete, many of the priests and worship leaders rejoiced and led the people of Israel in praising God. At the same time, there was a group of older people who wept because this temple was not as great as the previous temple. This group looked back with sorrow and regret, stuck in the past. The other group looked ahead to the future with joy and praise.
This story emphasizes to me that we have the freedom and the power to choose how we respond to the circumstances of our lives. We have many opportunities to be sad over things that have been lost. Each of those opportunities is also a chance to be happy in the current situation. The choice is ours.
Let me encourage you today to decide right now that when you must choose between a sad, negative attitude and a happy, positive attitude, you will choose to be optimistic. The simple act of being positive will help and strengthen you, whatever your circumstances may be.
Prayer:
“Father, help me to look forward to the future with joy instead of wallowing in the past and mourning over what has been lost. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
