Todo el mundo aclama cuando un jugador hace un home run o marca un gol. Pero abucheas o te quejas cuando el jugador contrario alcanza una bola alta o el tirador no logra colarla en la red. Aunque dos jugadores lancen la pelota a la misma distancia, nadie aclama al que se elimina antes de alcanzar la base.
¿Has sido alguna vez el jugador que ha fallado? No es divertido cuando nadie te aclama. El rey Saúl era un gran luchador y soldado, pero desde luego que no le gustó cuando aclamaron a David más que a él. La envidia mató la amistad que había entre ellos, de manera literal. Saúl intentó matar a David, de verdad, varias veces, por la envidia que tenía de él.
Parece algo común que chicas y chicos sientan envidia de otros niños. ¿Te irritas por la victoria de otro? ¿Te resulta difícil alegrarte por los amigos que son mejores que tú? ¡Cuidado con el veneno de la envidia! Arruinará tu equipo y acabará con las amistades.
Oración
Señor, me resulta difícil cuando otros son mejores que yo, sobre todo si yo era el mejor hasta entonces. Te ruego que me ayudes a regocijarme con mis compañeros de equipo y mis amigos, y a alegrarme de verdad cuando lo hacen bien.
Day 350 – Poisonous Thoughts
As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” (1 SAMUEL 18:7−8)
Everyone cheers when a player hits a home run or scores a goal. But you boo or moan when a player’s fly ball gets caught or a shooter misses the net. Even if two players hit the same ball the same distance, no one cheers for the player who is tagged out.
Have you ever been the player who strikes out? It’s not much fun when no one cheers for you. King Saul was a strong fighter and soldier, but he sure didn’t like it when David did better than he did. Jealousy killed the friendship between Saul and David—literally. Saul actually tried to kill David several times because Saul was so jealous of him.
It seems a common thing for girls and boys to get jealous of other kids. Do you find yourself stewing over someone else’s victory? Do you find it difficult to be happy for friends who do better than you? Watch out for the poison of jealousy. It ruins teams and ends friendships.
Prayer
Lord, it’s hard when others do better than I do, especially if I was at the top. Will you help me rejoice with my teammates and friends and truly be happy when they do well?
