Todos ésos los he cumplido —dijo el joven—. ¿Qué más me falta? Si quieres ser perfecto, anda, vende lo que tienes y dáselo a los pobres, y tendrás tesoro en el cielo. Luego ven y sígueme.
(MATEO 19.20–21)
Este hombre que hablaba con Jesús pensaba que ya la tenía asegurada [la vida eterna]. Había observado cada norma desde que era pequeño. Estaba entusiasmado pensando que lo había hecho todo bien delante de Jesús. Entonces este le indica que es necesario que renuncie a todo lo que posee. Es probable que este joven pensara: «No puede estar hablando en serio». Apenas podía creer lo que estaba oyendo. Se dio la vuelta y se marchó. Sintió que Jesús le estaba exigiendo demasiado.
¿Pero de verdad estaba pidiendo demasiado? No. Jesús sabía que a este muchacho le gustaba el dinero y las posesiones más de lo que amaba a Dios y que ese amor al dinero le causaría problemas. Así es como funciona. Cada vez que amamos algo más que a Jesús acabamos metidos en líos. A este hombre le asustaba demasiado soltar sus cosas. Las amaba y no podía vivir sin ellas.
Jesús conoce nuestro corazón. Sabe si hemos puesto algo por delante de él, ya sea tener un buen aspecto, enamorarse de una estrella de cine, entrar en el equipo o encajar con nuestros amigos. Cuando todas estas cosas están antes que Dios, las cosas se ponen feas. De modo que Jesús, por amor, nos pedirá que lo dejemos todo y que lo conservemos a él en el primer lugar.
Oración
Señor, no quiero que nada se interponga en mi relación contigo. Muéstrame si he puesto algo por delante de ti.
Day 270 • Let It Go
“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
(MATTHEW 19:20−21)
This guy talking to Jesus thought he was in. He had followed every rule since he was a little boy. He was excited, thinking he was as good as gold with Jesus. Then Jesus tells him that he needs to give away all of his stuff. The young man probably thought, “Seriously?” He could hardly believe it. He turned and walked away. He felt like Jesus was asking too much.
But was Jesus really asking too much? No. Jesus knew this guy loved money and stuff more than he loved God and that love of money was going to get this guy in trouble. That’s the way it works. Any time we love something more than Jesus, we end up in trouble. This guy was just too scared to let go. He liked his stuff and couldn’t live without it.
Jesus knows our hearts. He knows if we’ve put something ahead of him, whether it’s looking good, a movie star crush, making the team, or fitting in with our friends. When those things get ahead of God, things get messy. So out of love, Jesus will ask us to set them down and keep him first.
Prayer
Lord, I don’t want anything to get in the way of my relationship with you. Show me if I’ve put something ahead of you.
