Jesús dijo: «No busco hacer mi propia voluntad sino cumplir la voluntad del que me envió».

Recuerda que lo que parece tan importante ahora solo es temporal. A la luz de la eternidad, lo que otros piensen de ti en este momento no va a importar en lo absoluto. En realidad, es probable que ni siquiera importe en unos pocos años. ¿Puedes recordar a las personas cuya opinión te interesaba más en la secundaria? ¿Cuán significativas son las opiniones de esas personas para ti hoy? Tal vez no te afecten en lo absoluto. Lo que parecía tan importante entonces ahora resulta irrelevante. Complacer a la gente siempre es una actividad mental a corto plazo. Los beneficios nunca duran.
Todo lo que nos rodea hoy nos dice que la riqueza, el éxito y la fama harán que obtengamos la aprobación de los demás, pero la verdad es que ninguno de estos valores perdurará. Todos son temporales. Dios dice: «El mundo se acaba con sus malos deseos, pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios permanece para siempre».
¡Recuerda que tienes que complacer solo a una persona! Si lo que hago agrada a Dios, eso es siempre lo correcto que hacer, y puedo dejar de preocuparme por la reacción de todos los demás. Esto simplifica dramáticamente la vida. También evita el pecado de la idolatría.
Los primeros dos de los Diez Mandamientos son: (1) «No tengas otros dioses además de mí» y (2) «No te hagas ningún ídolo». Un ídolo es cualquier cosa que ponga en mi vida antes que Dios. Si la aprobación de alguien me importa más que la de Dios, entonces esa persona se ha vuelto un ídolo para mí. Jesús destaca que es imposible tener dos dioses en la vida: «Nadie puede servir a dos señores». Tienes que decidir. Como Pablo dijo: «¿Qué busco con esto: ganarme la aprobación humana o la de Dios? ¿Piensan que procuro agradar a los demás? Si yo buscara agradar a otros, no sería siervo de Cristo».
Esta verdad de que tengo que agradar solo a Dios es una clave importante para llegar a ser firme y no dejarme manipular por la desaprobación de otros. Jesús no se dejó influenciar por la crítica o el temor al rechazo, ya que vivía para un público de Uno. Él dijo: «No busco hacer mi propia voluntad sino cumplir la voluntad del que me envió». Para ser semejantes a él, debemos hacer lo mismo.
Reflexión:
Un día rendirás cuentas a Dios por tu vida. Si mantienes esta realidad en mente, cambiará la forma en que vives cada día y para quién vives. Tu valor se fortalecerá a fin de decirle que no a las cosas que preferirías no tener que explicarles a Dios algún día.
DAY 42/Eighth part – The People-Pleaser Trap
Jesus said, “I don’t try to please myself, but I try to please the One who sent me.” D opinions mattered the most to you in high school? How important are those people’s opinions of you today? It’s probable that they don’t matter at all today. What seemed so important then is now irrelevant. People-pleasing is always a short-term thinking activity. The benefits never last.
Everything around us today tells us that wealth, success, and fame will earn us the approval of others, but the truth is, none of these values will last. They are all temporary. God says, “The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.”
Remember that I only have to please one person! If what I do pleases God, it is always the right thing to do, and I can stop worrying about everyone else’s reactions. This dramatically simplifies life. It also keeps me from the sin of idolatry.
The first two of the Ten Commandments are (1) “you must not have any other god but me,” and (2) “you shall not make for yourself an idol of any kind.” An idol is anything I put first in my life before God. If someone’s approval matters more to me than God’s, then that person has become an idol in my life. Jesus pointed out that it is impossible to have two gods in your life: “No one can serve two masters.” You have to decide. As Paul said, “I’m not trying to win the approval of people but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”
This truth, that I have to please only God, is an important key to becoming resistant to being manipulated by disapproval from others. The reason Jesus was not swayed by criticism or the fear of rejection is that he lived for an audience of One. He said, “I don’t try to please myself, but I try to please the One who sent me.” To be like him, we must do the same.
Reflection:
One day you will give an account of your life to God. If you keep this in mind, it will change how you live each day and for whom you live it. It will strengthen your courage to say no to things that you would rather not have to explain to God someday.
